How to Find Anafiotika in Athens, Greece

Sharing is caring!

When I was first figuring out how to get to Anafiotika in Athens, Greece, I struggled with getting lost, getting turned around, and walking aimlessly… a lot.

Like most cities, Athens is made up of a bunch of neighborhoods.

Plaka is probably the major one that you have heard of because it’s the big tourist hot spot, but there’s one that you’ve probably *sort of* heard of and might sound like a myth because people talk so highly of this cute, hidden neighborhood that mirrors a small village on a Greek island.

How to Find Anafiotika in Athens

Anafiotika is nestled on the side of the Acropolis and there’s no street signs or any indication that this village exists. I am going to help you get there and then take you around the instagrammable streets of this tiny, quiet neighborhood.

How to Get to Anafiotika in Athens

I’m going to start with the easier way to get there without getting lost or wandering around aimlessly like a lost tourist.

When I first heard about this place I googled and searched a lot to try to find a set way to get to the village, unfortunately the directions I found had told me to put a church in the GPS and follow it from there.

Well, my little American GPS couldn’t handle all the Greek words and it didn’t work. I was then stuck wandering around like a lost puppy trying to find, what I was starting to call, the mythical village of Anafiotika.

I knew the area that it was and I knew it was just below the north slope of the Acropolis, so I just walked that way and I walked up.

Finally walking up a road that looked like it was a private drive, actually led me to Anafiotika!

It was so easy and then I realized that this was a street that I had being passing everyday!

Mind blown.

Check out the map at the bottom of the page to see the location of the entrance. I’m going to make a landmark as your starting point.

Start at the main entrance for the Acropolis and walk to your left so that the Acropolis stays on your right side. There’s only one path to take, so you won’t be confused.

Keep following the path around and you will pass the Church of Metamorphosis. Once you get there, you know you’re getting close.

Continue walking and you will see a driveway type path going up a steep(ish) hill that veers to the right. Go up there!

Continue walking up, it will turn into stairs that go up and “hug” the north slope of the Acropolis. *Picture alert* The view from up here is magical! Just after the viewpoint, you’ll be at the rooftops of Anafiotika.

If you take the first set of white “Greek island-looking” steps down, it will lead you right into the middle of the neighborhood.

Exploring Anafiotika

There is really only one main strip that goes through the middle, on one end is a church and then the other side are a few alley ways of street art. There are no street signs and there are no real streets.

There is really no way to pin point the locations on a map because there are only 45 houses that make up this tiny area, so you just need to walk around and explore.

To give you a little bit of direction, once you get down to the “main strip” (don’t worry, you will know!), with your back to the Acropolis, if you go right, there is a cute church, yellow and purple wall, and cute alleyways.

If you go left, you will find the area where I took the “insta-famous” photo (the one at the top of this post) and the alley ways of street art that are must see.

I promise down every alleyway and around every turn you will find something special. *Remember* These are people’s homes, so you need to be respectful.

Anafiotika Map

The map is pinpointed with your starting location (blue pin), the road that goes up the hill to Anafiotika (red pin), and the neighborhood itself (purple pin). The big open area in the middle of the map is the Acropolis. The tiny cluster of buildings with the purple pin is Anafiotika.

We usually stay in the Plaka neighborhood. Can you walk to Anafiotika from the Plaka? I am 100% Greek and my husband taught there for 7 years yet I don’t know this charming neighborhood.
