It’s the most wonderful time of the year… with Christmas at Castle Howard. If there’s one place that does Christmas like no other stately home, it’s Castle Howard. I’ve been visiting every year since 2018, and each year, I am still in awe of the detail, the decorations, and how consistently impressive it is!

Even though the theme changes annually, the core of the experience — the house, the gardens, the food, the shopping — remains as magical as ever.

Castle Howard is located in the county of Yorkshire in England. The house is a filming location for Brideshead Revisited, Garfield: the Tale of Two Kitties (Did anyone other than me see that movie?), and most recently, Bridgerton (*insert fangirl squeal*).

Anyway, Castle Howard is not a castle, but a beautiful stately home surrounded by the Yorkshire countryside and large lakes. I could go on about the history, the architecture, and the artwork, but we’re here for CHRISTMAS!

How to Get to Castle Howard

Castle Howard is conveniently located just outside of York, and getting to the house from Leeds, York, and Yorkshire is straightforward.

By Car

If you’re driving, good news: Castle Howard is extremely car-friendly and has plenty of free parking.
The estate is about:

• 25 minutes from York
• 45–50 minutes from Leeds
• 1.5 hours from Newcastle
• 4.5 hours from London

If you’re visiting at Christmas on a weekend, give yourself extra time. Traffic queues can build at the entrance because everyone tends to arrive around the same time.

By Train

This is one of the most reliable car-free options.

York has fantastic rail connections, and from there you can get a taxi straight to Castle Howard.
The ride takes about 25–30 minutes, and local drivers know the estate well (you won’t need to explain where you’re going).

It’s a good idea to pre-book your return taxi, especially on weekends in December when demand is high.

You can also opt for an Uber from York Train Station, but getting an Uber back from Castle Howard will be quite tricky, so don’t rely on the app to find anyone in the area when you are ready to leave.

By Bus

There is a direct bus service from York to Castle Howard. Bus 81 runs from Station Avenue, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the train station, and drops you off at the entrance to Castle Howard.

How to Get Tickets for Christmas at Castle Howard

Christmas at Castle Howards sells out every year! Sometimes, a month in advance for peak times throughout the season.

• Book directly with the Castle Howard Website
• You must book a timed entry slot for the house.
• Weekends sell out first.
• Mid-December is the busiest week.
• Late November and early December are the quietest times (relatively speaking).

What to Expect When You Visit Christmas at Castle Howard

Touring the House

One of the highlights of any visit is the Castle Howard Christmas house tour. Each room is dressed to the nines, with trees, garlands, and seasonal touches that change with the theme each year. Even if the theme isn’t your favorite, the way the house is decorated will still impress

Expect to spend time in:

• The grand entrance hall with its huge tree, perfectly decorated to the theme. This is my favorite part every year!
• Rooms that feature seasonal displays alongside the usual artwork and furniture.
• Spaces designed to feel immersive, with music, scents, and subtle lighting that make everything feel magical.

Because I’ve visited multiple years in a row, I can tell you that while the theme changes, the house never loses its charm. You’ll want to plan on at least an hour to walk around the house fully, or two hours if you’re like me and take photos of everything!

Gardens and Grounds

The Castle Howard Christmas gardens are a major part of the experience. Open from 10am, you can start your visit with a walk around the estate before heading into the house. Paths are lined with festive lights and decorated trees, making it a lovely stroll even in the chillier months.

The grounds are extensive, so there’s plenty to see, from sculptures to the stable courtyard, which often hosts seasonal markets and installations.

Don’t miss the Atlas Fountain, even though it gets turned off during the winter months, it’s still a gorgeous centerpiece for the gardens with the house in the background.

Events During Christmas at Castle Howard

On top of the regular Christmas at Castle Howard experience, you can book extras or choose to go during a special event.

On select days, you can do a twilight tour. It’s a special after-dark guided tour of the house. Most of the time, the tour is led by one of the house designers. They are also small group tours, so it’s a more intimate experience.

Father Christmas at the Castle is also on select days through November and December. Kids can meet Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and they get a special gift after their visit!

If you are feeling crafty, you can sign up for one of Castle Howard’s workshops, like wreath making. Or if you want something not so hands-on, why not book a special Christmas Afternoon Tea at Castle Howard?

Food and Drink at Castle Howard

There are plenty of places to eat and drink at Castle Howard when you visit during the Christmas season. Aside from the attending the special Afternoon Tea event, which is quite pricey, you can enjoy a scone and tea in the cafe after your Castle Howard visit.

The cafe, as soon as you exit Castle Howard in the Christmas Marquee, is the perfect place to grab a soup or sandwich and enjoy a relaxing lunch after walking around the house for over an hour! There is also a courtyard cafe which offers table service if you are planning on staying longer and want more of an experience.

There are also some food stalls around the courtyard and boathouse that offer things like drinks and quick snacks, but these stalls change from year to year.

Quick Tips for Christmas at Castle Howard

• It’s a quick day trip from York and easily accessible.
• Buy your tickets in advance online (it’s cheaper and faster).
• Parking is FREE! (Very rare with historical sites)
• The ticket office opens at 9:45am, 15 minutes before the house, so get there when it opens!
• The house is just a short walk (5 minutes) from the ticket office.
• You can walk around the gardens while you’re waiting for the house to open.
• Go on a weekday, it won’t get busy until 11-ish, so that gives you an hour to enjoy the house (pretty much) all to yourself.
• The gift shop has PLENTY of sparkly Christmas ornaments, so make sure you leave some room on the tree!
• Stop by the farm shop on the way out for handmade pastries, artisan cheeses, and craft gin and beer.

Is Christmas at Castle Howard Worth It?

This event is something everyone at every age can enjoy… there’s live music on select days, Santa on the weekends, and a few local stalls that create their “mini Christmas market” (definitely not a full-scale one, so don’t go here to visit a Christmas Market specifically).

I think this event is totally worth it! It’s a little bit pricey for those trying to stick to a budget, but I think the experience far outweighs the cost!
