What is the Looe Valley Line?
The Looe Valley Line is a scenic branch railway line in southeast Cornwall that runs from the market town of Liskeard to the coastal fishing port of Looe.
This route is only 8 miles long, but it’s one of the most scenic train journeys in England. The line weaves in and around thick forests until you get closer to Looe, when it joins the East Looe River.
Originally built in the 19th century to transport minerals and goods, the line now serves as a community route and a favorite for visitors looking to experience Cornwall’s charm at a slower pace.
The line is operated by Great Western Railway, and it’s a very affordable and easy way to experience Cornwall if you don’t have a car!
Why Take the Train to Looe Instead of Driving?
Cornwall is not the easiest place to get around; in fact, the winding and narrow roads can seem quite intimidating at times. Even if it’s your first time in Cornwall and you’re just dipping your toes in the Cornish water to see if you want to explore more of Cornwall at a later date, you’ll love this trip!
It’s also the greener choice when it comes to travel in Cornwall, reducing your carbon footprint and reducing traffic on those tiny roads! Plus, you won’t have the stress of finding a parking space, which can be quite difficult in the heart of summer.
Journey Details: Liskeard to Looe on the Looe Valley Line
Your adventure begins in Liskeard, a small market town on the mainline with major connections from Plymouth, Truro, and London! Yes, that’s right, London!
A weekend break in Looe is the perfect getaway from London life if you want to experience this amazing part of the UK. The train to Liskeard from London will take you 3 hours and 24 minutes for the shortest journey, but can also take up to 4 hours if you have a change. So my advice is to check Trainline and find a direct train, you’ll thank me later!
Once you’re at Liskeard Station, you’ll want to follow the signs for the trains to Looe because the Looe Valley Line is separate from the main part of the station. Additionally, the platform that operates the Looe Valley Line is somewhat of a mini-museum, allowing you to learn a little bit about the line’s history.
The train only takes about 30 minutes from Liskeard to Looe, and it’s one of my favorite train rides in the UK… and I’ve been on quite a few heritage lines! When you get to Looe, it’s just a quick 5-minute walk up the river to get to the bridge in Looe (the perfect starting point for your adventure!).
Tickets and Timetables for the Looe Valley Line
Trains on the Looe Valley Line run regularly throughout the day, usually one every hour or so during summer. The service is less frequent in the evenings and during winter months, so always check the timetable to ensure you plan your trip to Looe accordingly.
Tickets are surprisingly affordable for such a scenic train journey, as an off-peak day return from Liskeard to Looe will only set you back a few pounds, especially if you book your tickets in advance! You can purchase your tickets from Trainline or Great Western Railway.

Things to Do in Looe after Your Train Journey
Stepping off the train in Looe is stepping off into your own picture-perfect Cornish postcard. You can start by walking around the narrow streets of East Looe, browsing the local shops, grabbing a pasty from Sarah’s Pasty Shop, or lounging on the East Looe Beach.
You could also take a glass-bottomed boat trip, a walk around the edge of West Looe, a coffee at The Sardine Factory, afternoon tea on the rooftop terrace at the Portbyhan Hotel, or a pint in Looe’s oldest pub, The Jolly Sailor.
For dinner options, grab some fresh seafood (because it’s all locally caught… yummmmm) at The Smuggler’s Cott, The Sardine Factory, or Fifty Looe.

Field Head Hotel in Looe: I always stay here when I visit Looe. I LOVE the balcony room and waking up to the sound of the ocean in the morning.
Tiptoe Barn in Liskeard: The Tiptoe Barn is just outside of Liskeard, so if you are driving, this is a great, quiet place to stay.
Elnor Guest House in Liskeard: This cozy guesthouse is in a great location and perfect if you want budget-friendly accommodation in Cornwall.
