The view of Varenna from Bar il Molo, one of the best things to do in Varenna

Best Things to Do in Varenna, Lake Como

Sharing is caring!

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Varenna, I’m here for you! I love Varenna, it’s got such a great vibe, from the moment you step off the ferry (or train) to walking through the narrow streets. This charming lakeside village on the eastern shores of Lake Como is a must-visit for your Lake Como itinerary!

The pastel-colored houses line the shores and harbor with cobblestone alleys straight out of an Italian romance movie (too cheesy?)… unlike its more famous neighbor, Bellagio, Varenna offers a quieter (although still very busy) atmosphere for exploring Lake Como.

How to Get to Varenna

This is easily one of the most well-connected towns in Lake Como! So it’s very hard to get lost whether you are just taking a day trip to Lake Como from Milan or arriving by ferry from somewhere else on the lake!

By Train: There is a train station in Varenna, one of the few towns that offer this option, so take advantage of it if you can! There is a direct train from Milan Centrale that runs up the eastern branch of the lake.

By Boat: All ferries lead to Varenna… pretty much. There are three ferry options when you travel to Varenna. You can take the slow ferry if you are coming from a stop nearby, the car ferry which runs between Varenna, Bellagio, and Cadenabbia, and the hydrofoil if you are coming from the bottom of the lake.

By Bus: Unfortunately, the buses are limited on this side of the lake, so I recommend choosing the train or ferry. If you are coming from Bellano though, it’s easy enough to hop on a bus. If you want to stay budget-friendly, then you can take a bus to Bellagio and hop on the car ferry to Varenna.

Where to Stay in Varenna

Varenna offers quite a few accommodation options, whether you are looking for budget-friendly options or a luxurious villa.

  • Villa Cipressi: This is a historic villa converted into a luxury hotel. You can’t go wrong! It’s cheaper than renting out a massive Talyor Swift-style lakeside villa!
  • Casa Ferry: Great location and it’s super close to the ferry terminal! This is perfect for the mid-range budget traveler who wants to save some money on accommodation but not sacrifice lake views!
  • Varenna Garden: Lovely two-bedroom apartment with a nice view of Lake Como. Also a more budget-friendly option!

Best Things to Do in Varenna

If you’re wondering about the best things to do in Varenna, you’re in for a treat! This enchanting lakeside village may be small, but it’s packed with historic charm, panoramic views, and so much more just waiting for you to discover! Whether you’re here for a day trip from Milan or planning a longer stay, Varenna is the obvious choice!

From scenic waterfront strolls to exploring historic villas, charming churches, and even hiking to a medieval castle, here are the top things to do in Varenna that you won’t want to miss.

Lover's Walk in Varenna

Stroll Along Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lover’s Walk)

If you arrive by ferry, then Passeggiata degli Innamorati, also known as Lover’s Walk, will be the first place you head towards. The walkway hugs the harbor as you walk along the side of the lake into the heart of Varenna.

If you arrive on one of the first ferries, then this walkway is peaceful and calm. By early afternoon, it can feel quite crowded for the narrow walkway, so if you are trying to avoid people, definitely enjoy this walk in the morning or the evening just before sunset.

Explore the Stunning Villa Monastero and Botanical Gardens

A visit to Villa Monastero is hands down one of the best things to do in Varenna. This historical lakeside villa is famous for its botanical gardens and terraced gardens. This is also one of my favorite views of Lake Como.

Botanical Gardens at Villa Monastero in Varenna, Lake Como

Wander through the lush gardens and relax on one of the many lakeside benches and take in the view or explore the villa (which is now a museum) with 14 fully furnished rooms, untouched from when they were first decorated.

If you only have time to do one thing in Varenna, you have to visit Villa Monastero!

Hike to Castello di Vezio for the Best Views of Lake Como

If you’re up for a little adventure, hiking to Castello di Vezio is one of the most rewarding things to do in Varenna. Perched on a hill above the village, this medieval castle dates back over 1,000 years and offers panoramic views of Lake Como that are breathtaking.

This is the perfect place to see the three branches of Lake Como coming together and if you want to see some unusual art pieces, there are several ghost statues dotted around the gardens.

Walking up to Vezio Castle from Varenna will take about 30-40 minutes. The climb is steady but steep in some places, so consider that. There is a small cafe at the castle, and it is usually open every day from March through November. I don’t recommend going to the castle if it’s raining.

Visit Villa Cipressi’s Terraced Gardens

Villa Cipressi Terrace Gardens and the Gates of Heaven

If you haven’t gotten your fill of botanical gardens and villas in Lake Como, add Villa Cipressi to your list! Villa Cipressi is now a luxury hotel, but the gardens are open to anyone, for a small fee. You can buy a combined ticket for Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi for a discounted price.

If you have been searching for things to do in Varenna or Lake Como, you have probably seen the Instagram-famous “Gates of Heaven”. If you weave down the terrace gardens to the bottom, you will run into the gate, you can’t miss it! It’s the perfect photo spot to catch panoramic views of Lake Como.

Enjoy the Charming Town Square, Piazza San Giorgio

The main square in Varenna is a lively area with cute cafes, delicious food, and the 14th-century parish church of San Giorgio. The church is free to visit and worth a few minutes out of your day.

This is the perfect little square to sit at one of the cafes and have a coffee or cocktail and watch the day go by.

Indulge in a Meal with a View

Bar il Molo is a picture-perfect restaurant right on the harbor. Unfortunately, you can’t make a reservation, but that also means you will be taking a chance to get one of the four tables with the picture-perfect view you want.

If you arrive for breakfast when the cafe first opens, then you’ll have a high chance of getting a good table. Also, if you want to finish your day in Varenna with sunset cocktails, the crowds thin out towards the end of the day when all the day trippers leave, so you can enjoy your Aperol Spritz in peace with a dreamy backdrop.

Stroll Down to Italy’s Second Shortest River

Yes, you heard me. Italy’s second shortest river, Fiumelatte, is a little under a mile and a half away from Varenna. If you want a stroll along Lake Como but not stray too far from Varenna, you need to take this walk!

The only thing is, the river is seasonal, so head that way between April and October to have the highest chance of seeing it.

Wander Around the Streets

Varenna isn’t very big and it’s a great place to take a stroll. Aside from the harbor area and Lover’s Walk, you can explore the narrow alleyways that make up the town.

Walking the streets if Varenna is one of the best things to do

I love walking along the lakeside, admiring the colorful houses, and stopping for a coffee at a cute cafe.

Paddle in the lake at Spiaggia di Varenna

Lake Como is not known for its pretty lakeside beaches, so keep that in mind if you decide to have a “beach” day here.

This is a great spot to chill out and watch the boats sail by in the distance. It’s also a nice spot to take a dip or swim in the lake. It’s only a small pebble beach, but you’ll see plenty of people here in the summer soaking up the sun on their beach towels.

Take a Private Boat Tour Around Lake Como

I cannot recommend a private boat tour enough! They are not cheap, but you can create your own itinerary with places you want to see around the lake. I recommend 2-3 hours to get a good feel of the lake, but if you just want to see a few villas nearby, you don’t need more than an hour.

You can also rent a boat for the day, without needing a boat license, and explore Lake Como independently. Take note of villas and places you want to see before you depart, and you can easily curate your own day on the lake.

Where to Eat and Drink in Varenna

So what is my favorite thing to do in Varenna? Or just Italy in general? Eat everything in sight! I seriously eat my weight in pasta and pizza every time I visit Italy… I’m not ashamed and you shouldn’t be judging right now, you’ll do the same when you get here! *wink*

I love finding authentic Italian cuisine in small local restaurants that are off the beaten path, but I also indulge in the touristy area because you gotta try everything!

Food and Drink in Varenna

  • Bar il Molo: I’ve already mentioned this one for its amazing views of Varenna, but I can’t give their food a 10/10, however, it’s a great place for cocktails!
  • Albergo del Sole: Nice outdoor area in the main square. Really nice pasta.
  • il Cavatappi: Great place for lunch and great service!
  • Visteria: If you are looking for a splurge or a restaurant with tasting menus, this is your place!
  • al Barilott: Perfect for a coffee and pastry, very chill vibe.
  • Riva Gelateria: The gelato here is yummy. Gelato is the perfect way to end a hot and busy day in Varenna!

Is Varenna worth visiting? Absolutely!

The view of Varenna from the ferry

Varenna may be small, but it’s overflowing with charm, history, and panoramic lake views that make it one of the best places to visit on Lake Como. Whether you are visiting Varenna for a day trip or planning on staying longer, you can easily pack your itinerary with lots of things to do!

I couldn’t think of a reason not to visit Varenna!
