Why Take a Day Trip to Warwick Castle?

If you’ve ever wanted to visit a fairytale castle in the UK, Warwick Castle is it! Just walking up the hill to the castle is a grand entrance. Unlike other castles in ruins where you have to imagine what life was once like, this fortress is alive with history, shows, and interactive experiences.

Warwick Castle is the perfect place to take a day trip because you can fit so much into your day. It’s not just walking around and taking pretty photos: it’s interactive exhibits, live shows, tons of history… you can easily pack your itinerary from start to finish!

The original wooden fortress was built by William the Conqueror in 1068, and it’s seen its fair share of excitement throughout the years. Warwick Castle was an important stronghold during the War of the Roses. King Edward IV was even held prisoner here by Richard Neville (also known as the Kingmaker).

How to Get to Warwick Castle

Getting to Warwick Castle from Warwick Station

Warwick Station is just a little under a mile from the castle and will take you about 15 minutes to walk there. The ground is flat so it should be an easy walk for anyone. You can always pre-book a taxi if you don’t want to walk or hop on a local bus, but the bus will take you longer to get there than it does to walk!

  • London to Warwick Castle: You can easily do a day trip to Warwick Castle from London. The train averages 1.5 hours from London Marylebone to Warwick station.
  • Birmingham to Warwick Castle: You can find really cheap day trip tickets from Birmingham to Warwick, and it takes about 26 minutes, perfect for a day trip!
  • Oxford to Warwick Castle: Oxford is a great weekend getaway, and if you want to take a quick day trip to Warwick Castle, you can get there in under 40 minutes!

Parking at Warwick Castle

I’m not going to lie, I’m not the biggest fan of the parking at Warwick Castle. I recommend leaving about 15-20 minutes extra to allow for parking and reaching the castle entrance.

Powered by GetYourGuide

Once you park, you have the option to wait for the free shuttle bus, which is quite large and can fit a lot of people, so don’t be discouraged if you see a long line; you will probably get on the next bus!

Or start you’re walking journey, weaving through the Warwick Castle accommodations and activities area, eventually coming to the shuttle bus drop off point and then walking up the hill to the castle.

No matter which option you choose from the car park, you will have a small climb up hill to get to the castle.

There is a charge for the parking lot, and you can use the machines in front of the castle entrance to pay for parking before you enter or after you leave… you can even pay on your phone and add your parking ticket to your digital wallet for easy scanning when you leave!

Another alternative for parking is to use the St Nicholas Park car park and take a short 10-minute walk to the castle entrance, but obviously, there is no shuttle bus.

Warwick Castle Tickets and Opening Times

Where to Buy Tickets for Warwick Castle

The easiest way to purchase your tickets is online on the official website, but you can purchase them onsite, but I don’t recommend doing that during the summer months when there can be long queues already. Plus, booking advance tickets will give you a better price! You can also bundle your ticket purchase with other attractions, such as Legoland Discovery Centre or Sea Life in Birmingham.

Opening Hours

The castle typically opens at 10:00 am and closes between 4:00–5:00 pm, depending on the season. Summer and Christmas events sometimes extend these hours.

Tips for Visiting

Get there before opening time so you can park and walk to the entrance. Once you enter the castle, head straight for the shows and get them out of the way early. Then you can explore the castle rooms and walk up the turrets.

Best Things to Do on a Warwick Castle Day Trip

Explore the Great Halls and State Rooms

Step inside the Great Hall and you’ll feel like you’ve gone back to the age of knights and nobles. All the armor on display is VERY impressive. The grand interiors and detailed displays bring Warwick’s history to life, making it one of the castle’s best highlights.

Climb the Towers and Ramparts

If you’re up for a bit of a climb, the towers and ramparts reward you with sweeping views across Warwickshire. There are a couple of different towers to climb and explore, and it’s the perfect place to take your photos!

Brave the Castle Dungeon

If you’ve ever been to another dungeon around the UK, you’ll know exactly what to expect. A fun and interactive show learning about the castle’s torturous past. It’s only a small extra fee and if you’ve never done a dungeon before, I highly recommend it! The actors are so fun!

Watch the Daily Shows

There is so much to fill up your schedule if you take a day trip to Warwick Castle, which is why I love it so much! And most shows are included in the castle ticket! What I also love about the shows is how educational they are, so not only are you entertained, but you are learning a little about English history too! Check the website for the show schedule!

Take the kids to the Zog Live show, watch the largest trebuchet in England wind, load, and fire, or cheer on your team during the jousting tournament!

Stroll Through the Gardens and Grounds

Even if you don’t want to watch the shows, you can enjoy nature with a stroll along the river banks or a picnic with a castle view.

Don’t Miss the Horrible Histories Maze

This is a maze, but with a twist! Explore the interactive maze while taking a trip back through England’s horrible histories. Open every day and included with your castle ticket! Geared towards kids, but adults can have fun with it too!

War of the Roses Live at Warwick Castle

I feel like the jousting tournament deserves its own section because it’s so much fun! I think it’s the best thing to do at Warwick Castle!

The jousting tournament is a special event that only happens May through August, so plan your day trip to Warwick accordingly.

War of the Roses Live, jousting tournament at Warwick Castle

Get transported back to 1455, the War of the Roses, when the House of Lancaster and the House of York were fighting for control of the English throne. Pick your side (white or red) and cheer on your team as they sword fight and joust to victory! The cast of the 30-minute show is great, and the special effects are fun too!

There is no seating in the arena, so you will have to stand the entirety of the show.

The arena is across the bridge (which doesn’t open until about 15 minutes before the show), and I recommend queuing up 20-30 minutes before the show so you can get a front row view of the tournament! Trust me, it’s worth it!

The Legend of the Trebuchet

The largest trebuchet in England is located at Warwick Castle, standing almost 60 feet tall and weighing about 22 tons.

The Legend of the Trebuchet live show a Warwick Castle

The Legend of the Trebuchet is a fun show where you go to battle with the enemies trying to get into the castle. The show lasts about 30 minutes, and you learn a little bit of history at the same time!

The actors explain everything about the trebuchet while it winds and loads, and then, of course, there’s a big countdown before it fires!

There is a huge viewing area, and plenty of space to sit down along the hillside and watch the show.

Events at Warwick Castle

Don’t let the fun and excitement end with just a day trip to Warwick Castle. Why not check out one of the many events at the castle throughout the year?

During Halloween, the castle turns into the Haunted Castle, with over 15 live shows, eerie entertainment, and scare mazes! Enjoy an evening of fun with medieval ceilidh dancing, or indulge in a medieval banquet. And if you visit around the holidays, you can walk the light trail, enjoy festive treats, and skate around on the ice rink!

What to Know Before Your Warwick Castle Day Trip

Arrive Early for the Best Experience

I’m going to be honest with you, the castle is VERY busy during the school holidays. Unfortunately, you might not be able to take the time off work or get the kids out of school before that, so your best bet for a quieter experience is to go first thing in the morning. Also, avoid summer weekends if you don’t want the massive crowds!!

Look For Hidden Corners

Take some time to wander around the castle grounds; you never know what you might find. There can be peace and tranquillity in the chaos if you look for it. I enjoy walking along the river or taking a moment to sit by the mill house, where it is less crowded.

Accessibility and Comfort

The castle grounds are accessible for all, including the jousting tournament and trebuchet show; however, you will need to climb steep stairs and narrow passageways for the towers, so be aware. Also, wear comfortable shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking!

Check the Event Schedule

There are so many events and shows that happen at Warwick Castle, so make sure you check the schedule for your visit so you can keep track of what you want to see.

Plan For Extras

Some attractions, like the Castle Dungeon, require an additional ticket. Decide in advance if you want to include them so you can book online and save time (and money) on the day.

Places to Stay Around Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle Hotel and Knight’s Village: Why not go all out and stay on the castle grounds? There is also free on-site parking, which is closer than the castle car park! This is a great hotel for families, as some of the rooms have bunk beds.

Modern 1 Bed with Roof Terrace: Ummmm… roof terrace, need I say more? This apartment is gorgeous and has a lovely view over Warwick. It’s also within walking distance of the castle!

The Rose and Crown: This former coaching inn is the perfect place to stay if you want to explore the castle and more of Warwick. The rooms are cozy, but modern.

Is it worth it to visit Warwick Castle?

Spending a day at Warwick Castle is like pressing pause on the modern world and stepping straight into England’s medieval past. From climbing centuries-old towers to watching knights battle it out in the jousting arena, this is such a fun day out!

I highly recommend visiting Warwick Castle and the surrounding area, especially if you are looking for a great day trip from London! I do think you need to plan accordingly, as weekends during the school holidays are VERY busy. If you aren’t bringing the family and want a more relaxing day, I recommend visiting sometime in June.
